Adopting a child from another country can be an exciting and rewarding journey. Thousands of US citizens adopt children from overseas every year and is known as “intercountry adoption”.

However, it is important to know the process to be followed as this can be complicated. Children who are adopted outside the United States must go through an immigration process. USCIS will determine the eligibility and suitability of the prospective adoptive parents (individuals) as well as the eligibility of the children to immigrate to the United States.

There are three processes for adopting a child internationally. And all the requirements must be met.

For US citizens adopting a child from overseas and depending on what country you choose to adopt from the process is either the Hague or the Orphan (Non Hague).

Another process applies to U.S. citizens or permanent residents who may petition to adopt through an Immediate Relative Petition.
