Immigration Reform: Top issue for Upcoming Presidential Election

The future of over 11 million undocumented immigrants could be in the balance depending on the results of the upcoming presidential election. Their lives can change radically; they could either be recognized as legally living and working in the United States or continue to live in fear of prosecution and deportation.

One presidential candidate promises to solve and legalize residence and offer a path to citizenship for millions of undocumented individuals and the other candidate threaten to have them deported, build a wall and after they have deported to their own countries and eventually give them the opportunity to reapply to enter the U.S.

Where is the point of moderation and balance? Many Americans have a favorable opinion of undocumented immigrants and 61 of those polled oppose the construction of a border wall. According to a poll carried out by the PEW Research Center, 45 of Republicans and 47 of Democrats believe that more border security and a path to citizenship for undocumented individuals are of equal importance.

Manual labor carried out by many of these Hispanic workers contributes to the economy of this country. Undocumented immigrants are just as hardworking and honest as U.S. citizens according to 76 of those polled.

With only 10 weeks to the presidential election, immigration reform is among the hottest topics to be discussed in the upcoming debates. The candidates are using it as a strategic tool that affects not only the future of millions of undocumented immigrants but also to U.S. citizens.
