Government will require new license to travel by plane in 2018
A law approved by Congress in 2005 will take effect at the national level on January 22, 2018. This law known as REAL ID requires that this new driver’s license will be required of all air travelers who are U.S. citizens, permanent residents, or legal aliens in the United States.
All 50 States must comply with this federal law. States like Texas, New Jersey, Illinois, New York and California have until 10 October 2017 to renew or adjust their driving licenses, with the new regulations and it will be necessary to produce documentation to prove identity.
When this law was approved in 2008, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced at the time that the new license will be secure, tamper-proof. This ID will also ensure better national security by controlling how air travel is monitored around the 50 states. DHS has warned that new licenses granted by state governments that do not cooperate with the program stipulated by the REAL ID will not be accepted as a document of identity.
