Pope Francis son of immigrants

During his first visit to the United States, Pope Francis gave an address before the U.S. Congress on August 24 urging lawmakers to embrace immigrants who come to this country in search of a better life.

There are approximately 50 million Catholics in the United States and the vast majority of Hispanic immigrants profess that faith. The Pope asked Americans to remember their immigrant roots mentioning that his family also had to emigrate from Italy to Argentina.   Pope Francis encouraged the American people to feel the plight of the undocumented and to resist solving this problem through deportation.

On Saturday the Pope gave a speech at the location where both the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution were signed. Again he touched on the issue of immigration and the plight of undocumented workers encouraging them not to be afraid of their traditions and that lessons learned from their elders has enriched the life of this country. Europe is also experiencing a massive inpouring of immigrants from Syria and other neighboring countries, that is creating havoc in many southern European countries.

It is not clear how the Pope’s message to Congress and undocumented residents will affect public opinion. His address to Congress may generate only a small amount of change in spite of all the attention that it generated.
