Dreamers continue to be Focal Point of Immigration Debate

Young immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as children by their parents and were protected by the DACA program, which was scheduled to end on March 5, are still in the balance.

As the Senate has debated immigration in a race to come up with a plan that would win bipartisan support, the future for Dreamers has gained even more prominence.

In spite of the fact that President Trump had declared that he would sign any bill that was presented to him, he has now pushed senators to oppose any bill that does not support a tough approach to immigration.

Last week a second federal judge  issued an injunction to continue the DACA program.  As a result USCIS has resumed accepting requests to renew a grant of deferred action under DACA if the initial 2012 DACA guidelines are met.  Until further notice, the DACA policy will continue to operate.

Undocumented immigrants who have been living, working and paying taxes for many years, but who arrived by other means and do not qualify to be protected by the DACA policy because they are too old to apply, is causing tension in communities between  those who qualify for DACA and those who do not.
