Governors of California and New Mexico pull back National Guard

The Governor of California Gavin Newsom announced today that he will pull back the 360 National Guard troops who had been deployed to the border with Mexico.   The Governor will address this issue in his State of the Union address on Tuesday, announcing how the National Guard are better employed in a new mission, fighting wildfires, collecting intelligence on drug cartels.

Governor Newsom’s decision comes one week after the Governor for New Mexico, Michelle Grisham ordered most of her state’s National Guard back from the border. Neither of the Governors considers the emergency of extra troops at the border, calling it a “manufactured crisis.”

Last week the Pentagon ordered moving 250 troops from Arizona to the border town of Eagle Pass, Texas, in advance of the arrival of the caravan of migrants. In a recent statement by the Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielson, these measures were taken to reinforce the area where the caravan may attempt to cross the border.
