Thousands of Asylum Seekers are Refused Bond by Justice Department

The Attorney General William Barr supports the Administration’s position that migrants caught at the border should be detained even when they have petitioned for asylum.

This action would deny thousands of asylum seekers from obtaining a bond hearing to request for their release.

According to Barr, the reason for this decision is to give Homeland Security time to further investigate  and “conduct the necessary operational planning for additional detention and parole decisions”.  This decision will not affect migrant children travelling alone or with family members, as children may not be detained for longer than 20 days.

This decision only worsens the humanitarian and security crisis at the border.  The new Secretary for Homeland Security, Kevin McAleenan warned that a rising tide of migrants at the border will place more strain on law enforcement and local service providers.
